 Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for HIV/AIDS in Africa, provided the keynote introductory address on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. As Canada's former ambassador to the United Nations from 1984 - 1988, Mr. Lewis chaired the Committee that drafted the 5-year UN Programme on African Economic Recovery. In September 1986, the Secretary-General of the United Nations appointed Mr. Lewis as his Special Advisor on Africa to aid in "the mobilization of the international community." Mr. Lewis also runs the Stephen Lewis Foundation
